Hunting wildlife reduces the number of wild animals that can cause damage.
One study (D’Angelo 2016) from Minnesota USA evaluated the effect of a localised hunt of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on corn yield loss, in addition to normal sport-hunting that was employed at both treatment and control sites. The corn yield loss was somewhat reduced (RR = 0.67), but this was not a significant difference and overall corn yield loss was low on all sites in the study.
Another study evaluated the effect of a bounty program on Hispaniolan woodpeckers (Melanerpes striatus) on cacao in Dominician Republic (Mitchell and Bruggers 1985), but did not find it to be effective for reducing damage (RR = 2.1).
