Providing meat baits treated with poison is intended to reduce carnivore density in baited areas and thereby reduce predation pressure on livestock. Two Australian studies have evaluated the effect of 6mg Compound 1080 (Animal Control Technologies, Melbourne, Vic., Australia) to reduce dingo (Canis lupus dingo) predation on cattle. In the first study, Campbell et al. (2019) did not find any reduced fetal or calf loss among cows (RR = 0.93) or heifers (RR = 1.80) in the baited areas compared to unbaited control areas. The second study (Edwards et al. 2021) also failed to detect any reduction in calf damage (RR = 0.92) or dry cows (RR = 1.36) relative to the control.
